Hey peeps! As you might now I’m currently in Ontario/Canada, near Port Hope to be specific. It’s a cozy little town at beautiful and vast Ontario Lake, and surprisingly enough there are quite a few vegan options! Coming here I never expected to write a blog post about my current home base, but rather about the experiences I’ll have in bigger cities like Toronto and Ottawa. But of course I’d never miss a chance to fill my belly with all the vegan goods, and there are quite a few!
Down below I’ll keep updating my findings in the upcoming two month, so keep checking that post if you’re curious about the plant-based foods (and my foodie adventures) in that part of amazing Canada. It is a beautiful country for sure!
Small Burger shack serving a variety of burgers, of which at least one is vegan, maybe two. I tried the Hera, which is a grilled portobello mushroom, veggies, peppers and red onion, all in a wheat bun (gluten-free available). The burger was really delicious and flavourful, I absolutely loved it. We ordered some sweet potato fries to share, which were crispy and delicious. The owner’s a nice guy who will probably help you find your vegan option of choice anytime.

One bright sunny day we drove by a crowded and colourful truck and at the corner of my eye I saw ‘healthy stuff’. That obviously immediately got my attention. So I asked Lin, the lady I’m staying with, about it and she told me that it’s a food truck and that she heard only good things about it. So I got online, checked the menu for vegan items… and couldn’t find any. Nevertheless there were vegetarian items which seemed easy to convert into vegan. I quickly messaged them on facebook about vegan options and they told me it wouldn’t be a problem to find something for me. And indeed it wasn’t.
When I got there on a somewhat more grey-ish and cloudy day it seemed not to affect that place, not even slightly. I got greeted by music, happy people and the dazzling smell of fried goodness. It’s such a happy place, giving you that LA feeling all over. When I went to the little window to ask about what to order I was greeted by the friendliest staff who made sure I would have everything I wanted.
With their help I chose the veggie taco, which has fried avocado in it. Fried avocado! In vegan beer batter! With it I ordered nachos with guacamole, because you can never have enough avo, that’s for sure. About ten minutes later I had the most wonderful, hot and steamy tacos in front of me. They were heavenly. I don’t think I’ve been that excited about a place in a long time. Of course I ordered way more than I could ever eat, so I took the rest of the nachos and guac with me down to the lake and finished them later on while reading Moby Dick. What a lovely day!
If you’re ever in that area you shouldn’t miss the chance to get those tacos, trust me! Just tell them you’re vegan and for sure they will provide you with all the avocado you’ve ever dreamed of!

Cute little café in the middle of Port Hope. The restaurant itself isn’t open yet, but their café is and it is so, so good! By simple coincidence I decided to walk in there some sunny afternoon to get myself a cup of coffee. Bold as I am, I asked if they had some plant-based milk and indeed they had almond milk. Since I like to stretch my luck I further asked if any of their cakes and treats were vegan and the lovely woman at the counter proudly presented me a complete window filled to the brim with vegan cupcakes, nanaimo bites, cookies and more. If you like chocolate, this is the place for you!
I’ve already visited them twice so far and once had the peanutbutter nanaimo bite and the ginger cookie, the second time a chocolate cupcake and the vanilla nanaimo bite. And it won’t be the last time for sure! It’s kind of incredible that such amazing vegan food would make it to such a small town. Their restaurant is not yet open (it should open in fall) but is supposed to have lots of vegan options on their menu. This place is really, really promising with such a lovely staff!
