Vegan in Ottawa

During my stay in Canada I’m very lucky to work for ten days straight and then have four days off in a row. That gives me the possibility to travel to farer places and just overall experience more of Canada for a longer period of time. Distances are a whole different thing over here! For my first four days I had the opportunity to visit a friend from Germany in Ottawa, Canada’s capital city. He was nice enough to offer me his very comfy couch in his extremely beautiful shared house. We had so much fun and I had both the opportunity to have a city guide (actually multiple guides, all of them doing a brilliant job) and explore on my own.

This post will be all about the amazing food I got to taste in this very vegan friendly city. I’ll try to have a second more private post as well once I’m done processing all the amazing things that happened here. By the way each and everyone of the places down below had just the friendliest people working there, because apparently Canadian people are all incredibly nice and sweet! Gluten-free options are generally available it seems.

Blossom Vegetarian Cafe

A small restaurant/café offering amazing bowls, burgers, wraps, salads and a few vegan treats as well. I went there immediately after arriving in Ottawa and freshened up with the Thai Peanut Bowl (you can choose between brown rice, basmati and greens), fresh and homemade Mint Lemonade and a Cocoball for dessert. The food was delicious, fresh and satisfying. Most of the items on the menu seemed to be vegan, but everything is clearly marked. At least half the dishes are gluten-free, too. Apparently they try to get as many ingredients from local producers, which is always nice. Definitely worth a visit!

SimplyRaw Express

Wellington Street is simply one big vegan fest it seems. I actually wanted to pay a visit to a vegan bakery which was then closed so I stranded just a few blocks down at Simply Raw. Happy coincidences are pretty awesome, and so was the little breakfast combo I had there. You can get a smoothie and a breakfast bar for about 13$. I had the Wake Up Smoothie, consisting of banana, kale and coffee beans. Very delicious! The breakfast bar looked simple, tasted amazing though. Buttery, chewy, satisfying. Loved it!

Rawlicious

As the name indicates this restaurant serves all raw foods, everything vegan. I’m usually not the biggest fan of raw food, but I enjoy a few raw meals every once in a while, though. I ordered the Rawitch, their take on a sandwich, with a side of Kaleslaw. Both pretty tasty. Since I couldn’t leave the restaurant after my quick lunch due to the heaviest rainfall Ottawa has probably ever seen, I ordered a hot chocolate to keep me warm and happy during my delay. Lucky me, that hot chocolate was absolutely delicious! Sweet and creamy and with lots of chocolate. Just perfect, don’t miss it if you ever go visit them.

Thimble Cakes

Adorable little bakery on Bank Street offering a wide variety of vegan cupcakes, cakes and coconut-based ice cream. I stumbled upon it pretty much by accident, the best kind of accident that is! I ordered both a kids serving size cherry and dark chocolate scoop and a caramel pretzel cupcake, both absolutely delicious! They also sell candy, vegan options available. You can order custom-made cakes as well.

Café My House

Ottawa’s fanciest vegan restaurant located in Wellington Street between SimplyRaw Express and the Strawberry Blonde Bakery. On weeknights they offer dinner, on weekends brunch options as well. I actually met my friend Natalie from Instagram for dinner there and we had a lovely time! Meeting people you’ve been talking to for some time on the internet could be my new favourite hobby, people should do it more often. We shared the amazing vegan cheese platter and ordered three of their small plates, as well as walnut chocolate fudge for dessert. It was absolutely amazing and we felt pretty special having such a fancy dinner.

The cheese was definitely the best one I ever had, accompanied by chutney, plant-based honey, pickles, crackers and toasted sourdough bread. Our second shared course was just as good and the rich and flavourful fudge left us completely satisfied. I’m a sucker for gin and allowed myself one of their delicious cocktails as appetizer.

All in all an experience worth having, rather expensive, though. It is a place for those very special occasions I guess. You can also order a course menu with accompanied wine. Out of our league, but maybe one day. If you can make it at a weekend for brunch you should definitely go there, prices are much more reasonable and the menu sounds simply amazing!

Strawberry Blonde Bakery

Probably the most well-known vegan bakery in Ottawa, or even Ontario. They have a little shop in Wellington Street (that’s apparently the place to be if you’re vegan, or Elgin Street I guess), where you can buy single items or directly order larger quantities. You will find their baked goods all around the city in organic supermarkets and cafés as well. I wanted the real experience though, and made it my destination for my bike ride along Ottawa River. The Brownie I got there was totally worth it! I also saw cinnamon buns, cookies, cupcakes, cakes, muffins, bread, peanut butter slices, and so on. Everything’s vegan, gluten-free and nut-free!

Black Squirrel Books

I’m very pleased to announce to have found my favourite place in the whole wide world. Coffee: check! Vegan Cake: check! Books: check! As soon as I stepped into the shop I felt a tinge of excitement. The choice of books is absolutely stunning, you can find everything from the classics, to books on literature theory, to comic books. I found some stuff there I couldn’t get my hands on in Germany for the life of it, some were even just 5$. Couldn’t buy too many of course, my suitcase is limited sadly.

I enjoyed an iced latte and a small lemon cream pie there, as well as the first couple of pages of one of my new books. Actually I never wanted to leave and just sit there, sip on coffee and read every single book. This is one of the many many reasons to come back to this lovely city! It’s a perfect fit!
