Vegan in Ottawa #2

Little Jo Berry’s

When I was in Ottawa last time I actually went to this place only to discover that it was closed. Good that I didn’t know then what I had missed, I would have been devastated. Luckily fate had me back in Ottawa and one of the first things I did was to pay Little Jo Berry’s a visit. I was basically in heaven, floating on a sugar cloud, apparently even glowing of pure happiness. If someone ever tells you that vegans miss out on anything, just take them there and you will shut them up forever. Vegan twinkies, pop tarts, donuts, ice cream sandwiches, root beer floats, burgers, sandwiches,… you name it, they have it!

Ordering something there turned out to be one of the biggest challenges of my life. We nailed it down to the root beer float, a smashed chickpea sandwich and a cookies and cream bar. They grilled the sandwich for us and it was crispy and flavourful and just perfect. I’ll try to make my own very soon actually. The root beer float is the perfect indulgence, creamy and basically happiness in a cup.

My further stay in Ottawa will probably revolve around visits to Black Squirrel Books and this little Paradise. I’ll be back as soon as possible! Perfect food and the most lovable owners! Jackpot!!!

Pure Kitchen

Pure Kitchen is a bright and open restaurant and café on Elgin Street, offering a wide range of vegan options. I went there twice, once for their breakfast to go options a few weeks back (both the coffee and the chia pudding were very delicious) and then again for dinner a couple of days ago.

The café offers everything you need to have a healthy and glorious morning – cold pressed juices, coffee, sandwiches, smoothies and so on. It was another accidental walk in by me, in search of some strong coffee and again a lovely surprise. Not only did their vegan variety brighten my morning, but also the lovely barista.

Dinner is a whole other level, though. The menu offers everything you could wish for, burgers, bowls and salads. Instead of a drink I had their Energized juice as an aperitif and I loved it. Beet juice is one of my favourite things ever. As a starter I finally had a Poutine, which is basically fries, gravy and (cashew) cheese. Yes, Canadians like soggy fries apparently. And it was good but very filling and hearty. Daniel had the Elevated Burger, smothered in creamy avocado and delicious aioli with a big kale salad. I went for the Fantastic bowl, which was incredibly good with rice noodles in thick peanut sauce and some kimchi on top. We both enjoyed our meals very much and had a wonderful evening.

The Tea Party

Wander through the looking glass into the world of Alice and her friends at The Tea Party – and even enjoy some tea, coffee and treats during your stay. Offering a huge range of the most wonderful teas (I had the Who’s Alice? and it was delicious) and a few vegan cakes as well. The whole coffee shop is an homage to Alice in Wonderland, furnished beautifully with lovely little details everywhere. We had some banana bread and tea (obviously) and read our books on the patio since it was a beautiful day. Definitely worth a visit and the best possible place to dive into your book a.k.a. wonderland of choice!

Moo Shu Ice Cream

Small ice cream shop offering individual and creative flavours, a few of them vegan, and a vegan cone. They open just a few hours every day (except Tuesdays) and change up their menu every week. A regular is their vegan chocolate ice cream and per usual there is another changing vegan flavour. When we went there, we had some coconut based pina colada ice cream and it was utterly delicious, with big pineapple chunks. I’m usually an ice-cream-in-a-bowl kind of person, but that is one tasty cone!

Nacho Cartel

One of Ottawa’s leading food trucks, serving tacos, nachos and milkshakes. The first two can be ordered vegan, sadly the delicious looking milkshakes haven’t been veganized yet. There are vegetarian cauliflower tacos and vegetarian nachos, which can be made vegan if you let them know.

The tacos were delicious, with the right balance of fried and fresh ingredients and not too spicy. You can heat them up with some of the sauces on the counter. I especially loved the nachos, which were served loaded with spring onions, salsa, jalapenos and red cabbage.

The Blended Berry

Another great food truck! We drove by it a couple of weeks ago and from the corner of my eye I catched ‘Acai Bowl’ – immediate excitement! Once home I searched for it on the internet and found it easily. The Blended Berry offers Acai Bowls, Smoothie Bowls and Smoothies, all of them freshly made of course. The different combinations all sounded great, I decided on the PB Chocolate one and Daniel got the Trail Mix Acai Bowl. Both came topped with a big load of fruit, granola and other goodies and the serving sizes are huge. $10 for an Acai Bowl of that size seems more than fair to me.
