Vegan in Montreal

Last week we spent two nights in the beautiful and grand city of Montreal, Quebec, and visited an impressive number of vegan places. Here comes the summary!

Sushi Momo

Pretty much the first place we went to upon arrival – Sushi Momo – set the bar for vegan food in Montreal way too high! It’s a small, crowded place downstairs, with brick walls and the typical open sushi kitchen. The menu is long and extensive, with more sushi variations than even I could ever eat. Getting a menu in English was a bit of a struggle and nearly ended up in me tearing Daniel apart (in my defence, it was late, we were hungry and I was desperate), but the very nice waiter found one for me after all. Making decisions was still hard and we just picked randomly.

The sushi was pretty much the most delicious sushi I ever ate, vegan or not. It was basically stuffed with tempura fried veggies, vegan mayonnaise, avocado, and other goodies, like jack fruit. We also ordered some fried avocado rolls – so good! The edamame were served to us on the house as a starter and were salty, spicy and delicious. I could eat there every day for the rest of my life, no kidding.

Making reservations is advisable, we still got a table with 30 minutes of waiting time, though.

Copper Branch

Vegan chain food restaurant with six locations in Montreal. We went there both days for breakfast, since it’s such an easy and convenient way to get a healthy start to your day. It must be noted though, that the second visit was way less successful than the first one. For one, they didn’t have all the items on the menu and then the (probably new) guy behind the counter took forever to get our order ready.

The first time we tried the matcha lime bowl and the quinoa bowl, both very tasty and satisfying. The second time we ordered the matcha lime bowl again and added the tofu scramble sandwich. I didn’t like the sandwich very much to be honest, the tofu was too watery and the bread soggy. I would go there anytime for the other two items, though.

Aux Vivres

Aux Vivres was recommended to me by multiple people and websites as one of the essential vegan places in Montreal. We went there half-starved, anxious and cranky after spending nearly the whole day getting my new tattoo done. Spoiler: we left satisfied and happy.

We both had a refreshing smoothie, Daniel picked the Tempeh Burger, while I went for their famous Dragon Bowl. Both were very delicious and the portions nearly too big. The Dragon Bowl is assembled with raw veggies, brown rice, tofu, and the famous dragon sauce – the perfect healthy meal to get you through the day! Definitely worth a visit for a laid back lunch or dinner.

Sophie Sucrée

Montreal’s first vegan bakery. We went there for a little afternoon treat and were really happy with all the lovely choices. We finally nailed it down to a caramel brownie and a pecan tart. Both were very delicious, sweet and buttery. Other than that you can get cupcakes, cookies, savoury items, and custom cakes on order.

We were a bit confused by the server who also added a scone to our purchase and upon further enquiry, she told us that they just baked too many and it would be for free. On our way out we both realised that she charged us about $5 more than it should have been, but we decided to not say anything for some reason. Things like that happen of course and we could have always chosen to go back.

La Panthère Verte

Another healthy and vegan ‘fast food’ chain restaurant with five different locations in Montreal, offering lunch items like pita sandwiches, salads, bowls, smoothies and desserts. It seems like people in this city are always on the run since there are so many quick and easy possibilities to get your lunch I guess.

We ordered the Tofu BBQ Pita and the Veggie Panther – a whole pita for Daniel, half a pita for me – together with a Tropikale smoothie and a peanut butter cookie. It was the perfect lunch, not overfilling, yet satisfying and delicious. The smoothie was creamy and the cookie chewy. We enjoyed it a lot!

Lola Rosa Café

Even though I read about this place quite a lot before, it didn’t make my list. A last minute decision to get dinner before we would hop on the bus back home led us there, though. And lucky us! Together with Sushi Momo it was definitely my favourite place in Montreal! Again there are two locations in the city, we went to the one at Milton Street. The place is small but comfortable, brick walled, noisy, crowded and wonderful. We were lucky enough to get a table without a reservation, soon after we sat down a long queue formed outside. People didn’t seem to mind waiting for their meal there, though, and we would soon find out why – it’s incredibly good.

The menu is completely vegetarian with vegan options clearly marked. I went for the Seitan Burger with a little salad and Daniel for the Burrito with delicious vegan cheese. The beer was cold, the food absolutely tasty and the atmosphere vibrant and fun. Soon we discovered the little drawers in the table and notes over notes tumbled out. People leaving little poems, love letters, life advice or doodles. Some of them nearly made me tear up. Daniel went to work and scribbled down something himself… twice, since I kept his first note selfishly for myself.

What a lovely place! Don’t miss it!
